Relational Database
A relational database provides secure, scalable, and efficient ways of storing and accessing large amounts of data, and is used to store program data. To access a relational database, Java developers typically use JDBC. The JDBC API (Application Programming Interface) is a standard SQL (Structured Query Language) database access interface for Java. With JDBC, you can access most SQL databases and concentrate on business logic, rather than on maintaining the database and communications programming.
