There are many ways to integrate an application with SAP, and the job of an IT developer is to determine the method that makes the most sense for the organization. You need to analyze the application and determine how the data should flow to and from the SAP system. You also need to consider the environment in which the application will run: Is it online, offline, within the corporate firewall, or outside of it? Another consideration is the knowledge level of both the development staff and the people who will support the integration solution after it is installed.
After you have examined the application, you can evaluate the various technologies and determine which is the best for you. This chapter outlined several alternatives, and, even though the thrust of this book is in the use of Java, you should also consider other potential technologies, such as ITS.
