scenario

A set of values you can plug in to a worksheet to determine how the values affect the result. When you play with sets of values in this way, you are said to be playing "What If?"



ScreenTip

A brief description of an object, button, or option that pops up when you rest the mouse pointer on the object, button, or option.



scrollbar

A strip on the right side or bottom of a window or to the right of a list that enables you to bring the contents of the window or list into view.



select

To choose an option or highlight one or more cells .



Shortcut bar

A strip of buttons that appear on the Windows desktop and provide quick access to the Microsoft Office applications. The Shortcut bar also enables you to perform common tasks , such as creating a new document or recording an appointment.



smart menu

A menu that displays only the most commonly selected options and automatically rearranges commands to place the commands you most commonly use near the top of the menu.



smart tag

An icon that automatically appears in a worksheet to provide additional instructions, list common commands or options, or display links to related data on the Web or in other Microsoft Office applications.



sort

To rearrange a series of records in alphabetical or numerical order based on the entries in a given column (or field).



speech recognition

A feature that enables you to dictate text and values and enter commands orally rather than by using the keyboard or mouse.



split bar

A small bar near the scrollbars that enables you to split a window into two panes. In two-pane view, you can see two parts of the same worksheet at one time.



spreadsheet

Synonym for worksheet .

static Web page

A Web page that a user can view but not change. Excel provides a feature for saving a worksheet as a static Web page to make data available on the Web.

status bar

The area near the bottom of the program window that contains information about the currently active document. Excel's status bar displays "Ready" when it is ready to accept an entry into the current cell and "Enter" as you type an entry, to help you remember to press the Enter key when you're finished. If you press the Caps Lock key to uppercase all characters , the status bar displays CAPS. If you press the Scroll Lock key, the status bar displays SCRL.



style

A collection of format settings that you can apply to selected cells by entering a single command. If you change any of the style's format settings, all entries formatted with that style are reformatted to reflect the change.



syntax

The order in which the items in a function's argument must be entered. In the function =PMT(rate,nper,pv,fv,type), for instance, the loan rate must be entered first, followed by the number of payment periods, the present value of the loan, the future value of the loan, and then the payment type.
