Installing Optional Components

Installing Optional Components

When you install Excel, using either the Excel installation CD or the Microsoft Office installation CD, the setup routine installs Excel's most common features and adds tools and features only when you choose to use them. Much of the available clip art and most international features, for example, are omitted from the installation. To manually install additional features and tools, perform the following steps:

  1. Load the Excel or Office installation CD into your CD-ROM drive. (If you have more than one CD, you must run the installation routine for each CD.)

  2. If the installation routine does not start automatically, double-click the My Computer icon (on the Windows desktop or on the Start menu), double-click the icon for your CD-ROM drive, and then double-click the Setup icon, as shown in Figure 12.15. The Microsoft Excel 2003 or Microsoft Office 2003 Setup dialog box appears.

If your computer is connected to the Internet, check for Excel program updates. To do this, open Excel's Help menu and choose Check for Updates . Follow the onscreen instructions to copy and install any program updates for Excel. If you see a link for the download center, click the link to find out whether any additional tools and templates are available.

The Absolute Minimum

Before working through this chapter, you were at the mercy of Excel, learning to use Excel to accomplish specific tasks . Now that you have completed this chapter, you know how to take control of Excel and make it conform to the way you work. Specifically, you now know how to

Add buttons to and remove buttons from Excel's toolbars .

Create your own custom toolbars and populate them with the buttons and lists you use on a daily basis.

Rearrange items on Excel's menus, remove options you never use, and add commands you want to enter via the menus .

Adjust the settings Excel uses to control the appearance and behavior of all its toolbars and menus.

Access the settings that control every aspect of Excel's appearance and performance and the way Excel performs various tasks.

Run Excel's installation routine again to add components that were not installed initially and remove any tools you do not use.

Congratulations! You now have complete control over Excel's appearance, performance, and behavior. Well, you have almost complete control. In the next chapter, you learn another trick for working more efficiently in Excel: You learn how to create your own macros, giving you the power to execute a complex sequence of commands by entering a single macro command, pressing a specific key combination, or clicking a button.
