Introduction

Novell GroupWise is an Integrated Collaboration Environment with a rich feature set and hundreds of options. The GroupWise client runs on just about every client platform imaginable, and the GroupWise back-end components run on Linux, NetWare, and Windows server platforms. And, might we add, Novell's SUSE Linux is fun to administer! For Tay, Linux has made him feel 10 years younger and significantly enthused about his field.

In recent years GroupWise has enjoyed a significant increase in third-party vendor support. Novell's efforts to make GroupWise standards compliant have paid off, and will continue to do so in the future. Although GroupWise is somewhat new to the Linux server platform, it is already completely supported by third parties. For security, for example, there is GWAVA for Linux. For management there is Redline. And finally for hot-backup and quick-restore there is feature rich product called Reload. And there is more to come. For the customer considering GroupWise on the Linux platform, there should be no hesitation; Novell GroupWise is rock solid on the Linux platform. This book was written largely with a platform agnostic approach, however for GroupWise administrators looking for guidance on running the GroupWise Agents on Linux, read Chapter 14 of this book.

Wherever possible we have tried to write this book in a step-by-step manner. For several of the more advanced tasks you will find detailed coverage of the steps you will need to take to accomplish those tasks. Novell's online documentation department is also very good at keeping the online GroupWise documentation up-to-date.

Enjoy GroupWise 7!
