The Synchronize Tool

The synchronization process is not nearly as simple as the description you see when selecting Tools, GroupWise Utilities, Synchronize. Assuming that ConsoleOne is connected to the primary domain, and the administrator highlights a user and synchronizes the user who belongs to a secondary domain, this is what happens:

  1. eDirectory-specific information in the user object is rolled into the synchronization request.

  2. The synchronization request is sent to the secondary domain that owns this user.

  3. The secondary domain updates the user object with information that was extracted from eDirectory.

  4. The secondary domain bundles the GroupWise-specific information about the user object into another synchronization request.

  5. The secondary domain propagates the new information to its post offices.

  6. The secondary domain sends the request from step 4 to the primary domain.

  7. The primary domain propagates this information to all other secondary domains.

  8. All other secondary domains propagate the information to their post offices.

Note

Synchronize works on only the object you have highlighted. For example, if you highlight a post office, it sends a message to the entire system regarding the post office object itself. All the users on that post office are not synchronized, just the post office object itself.

The synchronization process initiated here is nearly identical to the process of updating or creating objectsthe only difference being that no "new" information is created. The record is simply being repropagated through the GroupWise directory.
