Time Zones

In a GroupWise system with post offices in more than one time zone, it is critical that the time zones be correctly configured. If you do business via email with users on the Internet, you will also want to make sure your time zones are configured correctly so that timestamps on your email messages reflect reality.

The time zones that are predefined in GroupWise 7 should cover every real time zone on the planet. Most GroupWise shops find that after the correct time zone has been selected at the domain or post office level, timestamps system-wide are accurate.

Suppose, though, that you have a need to edit this time zone (Novell does not recommend this, but the functionality is here). Clicking Edit calls up a new dialog box in which you can edit the time zone. All aspects of the time zone are available to be edited, including the rather tricky algorithm for determining when daylight saving time begins and ends.

Numerous administrators have made a mistake using this interface. Suppose you have offices in Las Vegas and Phoenix. Las Vegas observes daylight saving time, and Phoenix does not, but both cities observe the same offset from GMT. You have assigned both domains to the mountain time zone. If you connect to the Phoenix domain and edit this time zone (to turn daylight saving time off, of course), you are making that change system-wide. You have just turned daylight saving time off for Phoenix and for Las Vegas.

Tip

The mistake was a simple one, and the solution is equally simple. Don't edit time zones. Put Phoenix in a different time zone than Las Vegas. There is even a predefined time zone, Arizona, that suits your needs perfectly in this case. Remember, you are performing system operations in this chapterif you edit a time zone, you do so for the whole system.

Warning

Do not edit time zones unless you really intend to do so. Editing time zones affects any other entities in the time zone that you edited.
