Installing the GroupWise Client from CD

First of all, we would like to discuss a "normal" GroupWise installation, but with a bit of a tweak: We will show you how to create a GroupWise 7 Client CD that will install the GroupWise client (more or less) automatically. In this section we will also discuss some of the more general installation issues. This is a good basis for the rest of the chapter, so even if you won't use this installation method, we recommend reading this section. The CD we will create practically mirrors the GroupWise 7 Client CD. However, we will make some changes, and with these changes you can accomplish the following desired effects:

  • The users will place the CD in their CD-ROM drives.

  • The GroupWise Installation will kick off automatically (as long as the users have not disabled auto-run). Otherwise, users must run the SETUP.EXE at the root of the CD. Users will not be prompted with any installation questions.

The next section discusses a scenario regarding the installation requirements, and then shows you how to configure SETUP.CFG based on those goals.

GroupWise Client Installation Requirements Scenario

Following are the requirements of this GroupWise client installation scenario:

  • The default IP address and port for a post office agent (POA) in your GroupWise system will be indicated.

  • Users should not be prompted to answer any installation questions.

  • GroupWise Notify will not be placed in the Windows startup group.

  • Document Integration will be disabled.

  • Users will not be prompted for the language to install; this installation will include two languages, US English and another local language (in this example, Dutch).

  • All other factory defaults are accepted.

Follow these steps to make a GroupWise 7 Client CD:

1.

Copy the entire contents of the GroupWise 7 CLIENT folder to a location on your local hard drive called CLIENTCD.

2.

Go to the CLIENTCD\CLIENT folder. Locate the SETUP.CFG file and copy it to the CLIENTCD\CLIENT\WIN32 folder.

3.

Locate the SETUP.CFG file that you copied to the CLIENTCD\CLIENT\WIN32 folder. Edit the properties of the file in Windows Explorer, and remove the read-only attribute.

4.

Use Windows Notepad to edit the SETUP.CFG file; you should configure the SETUP.CFG and the SETUP.INI files as explained in the next section.

SETUP.CFG and SETUP.INI Changes for the Client

In the SETUP.CFG and SETUP.INI files, make the following changes according to the scenario outlined earlier:

  1. To specify the default IP address and port, remove the semicolon from the following arguments in the SETUP.CFG file: DefaultIPAddress=x.x.x.x and DefaultIPPort=xxxx. Configure them with the IP address and port of a GroupWise POA in the GroupWise System. For example:

    DefaultIPAddress=155.123.178.16 DefaultIPPort=1677

    Tip

    It might be desirable to define a DNS name for the DefaultIPAddress that is publicly resolvable and accessible. By doing this, you will be assured that no matter where the GroupWise client is installed from, the client can find a POA in your organization and log in. You must also configure the public IP address to point to a POA. This can easily be done using network address translation (NAT) from the public address to an internal private address. This concept ties back to the proxy server option discussed in Chapter 8, "Configuring the Post Office Agent."

  2. To ensure that users will not be prompted with installation questions, change the line that reads ShowDialogs=Yes to ShowDialogs=No.

  3. To make sure that Notify is not placed in the Windows startup group, find the line that reads Notify= and change it to Notify=No.

  4. To turn off Document Integration, find the section that reads [IntegrationApps]. After the name of each application containing an =Yes, change it to =No. For example:

    Microsoft Word=No Microsoft Excel=No Corel WordPerfect=No

  5. To install a multilingual version, find the section that reads [Languages]. After the name of each language you want to be installed, change =No to =Yes. For example:

    English=Yes Arabic=No Dutch=Yes

    Also be sure to set the default language to your desired language, like so:

    Default=English

  6. By default, the GroupWise Client CD has GroupWise configured to ask in which language the installation routine should run, in English or in another language. Even if we disable all dialogs in step 2, users are still prompted about this. To remove this prompt, take the following steps:

    1. Locate the SETUP.INI file, found in the SDD\CLIENT\WIN32 folder.

    2. Edit the properties of the file in Windows Explorer. Remove the read-only attribute, if necessary.

    3. Edit the SETUP.INI file. Find the line that reads EnableLangDlg=Y and change it to EnableLangDlg=N.

Note

The SETUP.CFG and especially the SETUP.INI files have changed quite a lot when compared with the previous GroupWise versions. If you have used earlier versions of these files before, take a look at these differences. For example, the keyword HideAllDialogs=Yes as used in previous versions has been changed to the more intuitive ShowDialogs=No. Be sure not to use a SETUP.CFG file from an older version when installing GroupWise 7.

Testing and Finalizing the Client Installation

Take the following steps to finalize this scenario:

1.

Test this installation by running the SETUP.EXE file in the C:\CLIENTCD folder. If the installation does not behave in the manner you expect, tweak the SETUP.CFG file as needed.

2.

As soon as the installation behaves in the manner you expect, we're almost ready to burn the CD. The root of the CD-ROM folder will be from the contents of C:\CLIENTCD, and in this root there should only be one fileAUTORUN.INF and a single folder called CLIENT. The AUTORUN.INF should contain the following information:

[autorun] open=client\win32\setup.exe icon=client\win32\setup.exe,1

If the Autorun on your CD or DVD drive is enabled, the SETUP.EXE file from CLIENT\WIN32 should be automatically started and GroupWise should be installed.
