Understanding the GroupWise Windows Client Installation Process

The GroupWise 7 client is installed from the GroupWise 7 Client CD or from the CLIENT\WIN32 folder of the GroupWise 7 Software Distribution Directory (SDD). With some configuration the GroupWise client can be also be downloaded and installed from a web server.

In the past, Novell used its own setup program to install the client; with GroupWise 7 Novell has now introduced support for the industry-standard MSI format to install the GroupWise 7 Client for Windows. Figure 12.1 shows the new installation interface.

At first sight, the net result for the user is the same: He has to walk through the process of installing the client. Figure 12.2 shows the GroupWise client installation that is displayed if the user selects Custom as the installation method.

The options include Program Folder name, Add GroupWise to Desktop, Add GroupWise to QuickLaunch, and Add Notify to the Startup Folder, as shown in Figure 12.3.

When installing a multilingual version, the user also gets prompted for a default language, as shown in Figure 12.4.

As shown in Figures 12.2, 12.3, and 12.4, the installation process prompts the user for several kinds of installation decisions the user might not be prepared to make. This chapter discusses the changes introduced by MSI and how to remove the prompts that require users to make installation decisions.

Note

The GroupWise 7 32-bit Windows client runs on the following platforms: Windows 2000 on a Pentium 200 or higher, Windows XP Professional on a Pentium 300 or higher, or Windows 2003 on a Pentium 300 or higher, all with at least 128MB of RAM, plus 60MB of free disk space on the workstation to install the Windows client.

This chapter introduces six ways to install the GroupWise client and describes most of them in-depth:

  • Install the GroupWise client by running SETUP.EXE from the GroupWise 7 Client CD.

  • Install the GroupWise client by running SETUP.EXE from a GroupWise SDD.

  • Distribute the GroupWise client via ZENworks using SETUP.EXE.

  • Distribute the GroupWise client via ZENworks using the GroupWise MSI installation package.

  • Distribute one small executable called SETUPIP.EXE to users and have them run it from their workstations.

  • Upgrade the GroupWise client either via SETUP.EXE when users have rights to the Software Distribution Directory (SDD) or via SETUPIP.EXE when users do not have rights to the SDD.

Note

In past versions of GroupWise, Novell also delivered ZENworks AOT files to deploy the GroupWise client. However, with the introduction of the new MSI-based installation routine, as described in the next section, this option has become obsolete and these files are no longer available.
