Best Practices

It is difficult to make recommendations for GWIA implementation without first discussing GroupWise Internet addressing. Because Chapter 16 covers Internet addressing in detail, We suggest that you review the best practices there before installing or configuring the GWIA. Here are a few recommendations, however:

  • Dedicate a domain to the GWIA: We discuss default GWIAs and routing domains more in Chapter 16. For now, it is enough to say that if you have heavy Internet traffic (more than 30,000 messages per day), you might want to offload that traffic from your other production domains. Create a domain with no post offices, and dedicate a machine to running just that domain's MTA and the GWIA.

  • Strongly consider Access Control features: There are some great features under Access Control. For example, under the Default Class of Service, you should control the maximum mail message size that users can transmit via the GWIA. If you do not do this, users might end up using the GWIA as an FTP utility (effectively), which isn't an efficient use of the server. You can also create a special profile and add a few key users (such as yourself <grin>) who are able to send larger files than the users under the Default Class of Service.
