Setting the Display Order for Your Slide Show

When it comes to the display order, My Pictures lets you choose from three settings:

  • Show Pictures in Random Order

  • Show Pictures in Subfolders

  • Show Caption

What happens if the Show Pictures in Subdirectories option is unchecked, but all the pictures are stored in subdirectories? Media Center will ignore the option, and launch a slide show displaying pictures in the subdirectories.

The random-order setting quite literally selects the next picture without rhyme or reason. This setting will override any other order selection you may have made, such as Sort by Title or Sort by Date (see the section "Organizing Your Pictures").

The option Show Pictures in Subfolders deals with how My Pictures handles things if you launch a slide show from the folders view (as opposed to the thumbnail view). For example, if the Show Pictures in Subfolders option is not checked and you launch a slide show from the My Pictures subdirectory, only those pictures stored in the My Pictures folder will be used, and pictures stored in subfolders will be ignored. If the option Show Pictures in Subfolders is checked, all photos in the My Pictures subdirectory will be used in the slide show, regardless of whether they are stored in subdirectories inside My Pictures.
