Summary

Thousands of universities, as well as large and small corporations, have government contracts. These contracts vary from research and development contracts to production contracts. Most of them rely heavily on information systems and the use of national security information. These corporations are targets of attacks by other corporations, as well as by a nation's adversaries. This includes some of its "allies" (who are allies in a military sense but adversaries in an economic sense) who also want to gain that competitive edge in economic and military development. Furthermore, they want to do so without paying the high costs of research and development. It is cheaper to steal the information than to develop it on one's own.

A defense-industry-related corporation whose systems will process, store, display, and transmit national security information has a responsibility not only to the corporation, but also to the nation and its citizens. How well the corporation implements an InfoSec program that will be used to safeguard the national security information has a direct bearing on the security of the nation.

Although the loss of national security information would have more serious consequences than would follow the loss of corporate sensitive information, the InfoSec-related requirements, and the processes implemented to meet those requirements, really are not that much different from those of a corporation's InfoSec program.

Establishing an InfoSec focal point, establishing InfoSec controls, and documenting how systems will operate and how information and systems will be protected is always a good practice—regardless of the type of sensitive information processed, stored, and transmitted.
