Delivering on the ebXML Promise

Implementations such as CatXML are delivering on the promise of ebXML to provide open interoperable information content. Previously, organizations may have been capable of sharing and reusing business objects within their own confines, but very rarely achieved reuse across their business partners ' systems. Now, new business models created by widespread content-sharing on the Internet are requiring that organizations share content at unprecedented levels. The ebXML initiative focuses on meeting these capabilities.

These technology advances translate into specific business benefits. The ability to reach a large base of small vendor partners is one clear benefit, as evidenced by the U.S. government's EMall initiative. Another benefit is the ability to reach a widely varying supply-chain base in which a large company sends catalog data to many thousands of locations, all of which require specific customization.

A further benefit is the ability to deliver data to a grid of distributed content points. Each point can respond dynamically to requests , so performance can be optimized. Static information can be cached at central locations and only periodically updated, while transient information, such as stock levels, can be directly queried in real time. ebXML helps make all of these benefits possible. The ebXML initiative focuses on the needs of smaller businesses, which the DoD and EMall also address, in part because of federal regulations. But now ebXML can open up collaborative e-business for millions of smaller businesses, and extend the business process improvements and productivity benefits that only larger companies have enjoyed up to now. EMall provides a glimpse of the vast potential that ebXML can unleash .
