CPU Defined

The CPU, also known as the microprocessor, is the core or central intelligence of a computer system. The CPU accepts data input, processes the data, and carries out instructions. The CPU handles logical and mathematical functions. It is important to have as fast a CPU as possible for quick calculation and manipulation of data. The speed of the CPU (measured in megahertz) and the motherboard (clock speed) determine the amount of time it takes to complete a desired function or task.

A motherboard and its components (including the CPU) are always in danger from ESD. As mentioned in Chapter 2, ESD can damage the circuitry on a motherboard and destroy a CPU. Always transport components in an antistatic ESD-protective bag and wear a protective ESD wrist strap when upgrading a CPU.

The new A+ Core Hardware Service Technician exam will likely test your knowledge of newer microprocessors, their motherboard speeds, the slot or socket technology they are associated with, Levels 1, 2, and 3 caches, and basic processor troubleshooting.
