SAM—Security Account Manager.

An integral subsystem that maintains a database of information on user accounts, including passwords, any account groups a given user belongs to, the access rights each user is allowed and any special privileges a given user has.

SID—Security identifier.

A value, unique across time and space, that identifies a process in the Security system. SIDs can either identify an individual process, usually containing a user's logon identifier or a group of processes.

System partition

an active partition that contains the files needed to initialize and start the operating system.

System State data

the whole set of system configuration files. This set is slightly different for Windows 2000/XP Professional and server platforms. The System State Data set defined in Windows 2000/XP Professional includes the following files:

  • Xxx xxxxxxxx

  • COM+ classes registration database

  • Xxxx xxxxx, xxxxx xxx xxxxxxxxx xx xxxx xxx xxxxxx

The System State Data set for Windows 2000 Server operating systems includes all the same components included in the System State Data set for Windows 2000 Professional, plus the following data:

  • Xxx Xxxxxxxxxxx Xxxxxxxx xxxxxxxx, xx xxx xxxxxx xx x xxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxx

  • The Active Directory database and the \SYSVOL directory, if the server is a domain controller

  • Xxx xxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxx xx xxxxxxx xxx xxxxxxx, xx xxx xxxxxx xxxx xxx xxxxxxx xxxxxxx. Xxxx xxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxx xxx xxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxx xxx xxxxxx xxxxxxxx xxx, xxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxx xx xxx xxxxxxx xxxxxxxx.
