Working with Third-Party Filters

[ LiB ]

You've already seen that Paint Shop Pro includes many special effects for you, but additionally, there are hundreds of third-party filters, also called plug-ins, that you can use with Paint Shop Pro. Some are quite pricey whereas others are free. Look around on the Internet, and I think you'll be quite pleased with what you find. Whether you choose Flaming Pear's Blade Pro, Kai's Power Tools, Alien Skin's Eye Candy, or one of the hundreds of others, you'll find unique special effects in each application.

Most third-party filters are compatible with Paint Shop Pro and typically have .8bf as the filename extension, such as swirleypop.8bf or bubblejets.8bf. The .8bf extension is not, however, a requirement in Paint Shop Pro 8.

NOTE

Plug-ins from Adobe Photoshop work if they are from version 5.5 or earlier. Typically, plug-ins from Adobe Photoshop versions 6 or 7 are not compatible with Paint Shop Pro 8.

Installing Third-Party Filters

Each filter manufacturer provides a method and directions to install its filters. When you install the filters, make a note of their file location because you need to tell Paint Shop Pro where, on your computer, you keep those filters. Paint Shop Pro stores instructions to file locations in its Preferences area.

Accessing Third-Party Filters

After you've installed the filter and told Paint Shop Pro where to find the filters, new menu choices automatically appear that allow you to access the plug-ins.
