Moving Data Around

If you're not happy with the placement of data, you don't have to delete it and retype it. Excel makes it easy for you to move it around. In fact, Excel provides several ways to move data.

Cutting and Pasting Data

Excel uses the Windows copy and paste features to assist you with moving data.

NOTE

Optionally, press Ctrl + X or choose Cut from the Edit menu.

NOTE

There must be enough empty cells in the new location to accommodate the cut data or existing data will be overwritten.

Optionally, press Ctrl + V or choose Paste from the Edit menu.

Using Drag and Drop to Move Cells

Drag and drop is another method used to move data from one location to another. The drag and drop method works best for moving a few cells of data a short distance.

NOTE

Make sure the mouse pointer is a white arrow and not a black cross, which accomplishes a different function.

NOTE

To copy text with drag and drop, hold down the Ctrl key before dragging the selected text. Release the mouse button before releasing the Ctrl key.
