What's ahead for MIDP? This book covers the MIDP 1.0 specification, but of course the ink is hardly dry on the paper before MIDP 1.1 will come along. As of this writing, a new JSR has been created for the next generation of MIDP. Some information about the JSR is available at http://java.sun.com/aboutJava/communityprocess/jsr/jsr_118_midpng.html.

According to that page, the next generation MIDP specification will address several new areas, including the following:

• Security and HTTPS support

• Socket and datagram network connectivity

• XML parsing

By reading this book, you're already ahead of the curve-you'll learn about parsing XML in Chapter 11 and cryptography in Chapter 12.

According to the Web page, the new specification will be developed in Q1-Q2, 2002.
