Installing Reporting Services

Reporting Services (SSRS) installation can be easy as well, if you install everything on a single local server. There is also a new way to install Reporting Services, which is required to do a scale-out type of deployment. While you're going through the install dialog boxes, you select the "Install but do not configure" option in the Report Server Installation Options Page. This is called a files-only install. It copies the files, but you must configure the install in a separate step. Run the Reporting Services Configuration tool to configure and deploy this instance. You may choose the Report Server and Report Manager virtual directories. You can also create the Reporting Services database or connect to an existing Reporting Services database.

Be careful: Reporting Services uses server-specific encryption keys. During install or immediately after, you must create a backup copy of these keys using the Reporting Services Configuration tool, as shown in Figure 2-9. They will be required for you to restore your Reporting Services instance to another server. Do not put this off.

Reporting Services 2005 supports multiple instances, but Reporting Services 2000 does not. Reporting Services 2000 would have to be the default instance. A named instance of Reporting Services called MyTest would have a URL of http://myserver/reportserver$MyTest. Default configurations of multiple instances go to the same IIS IP address; however, you can configure different addresses if you wish.

If you're using a side-by-side install of Reporting Services 2000 and Reporting Services 2005, you must have two versions of the development tool. RS 2000 Report Designer runs in Visual Studio 2003, not Visual Studio 2005. Also, an SSRS 2005 install can use a SQL 2000 database as the Reporting Services metadata database.

RDLs created with SQL 2005 are not backward compatible with RS 2000. If you open an RS 2000 report in the SQL 2005 Report Designer, you will be asked if you wish to upgrade. When you upgrade the report, it will no longer be deployable to an RS 2000 Report Server. The SSRS Report Server Configuration tool cannot configure SQL 2000 RS.
