ACCESS MAIL COMMANDS FROM THE DOCK

If your Mail app is running, but you're working in another application, you can save time by accessing a number of Mail's commands right from the Dock by just clicking-and-holding (or Control-clicking) on Mail's Dock icon. A pop-up menu of commands will appear, including shortcuts for checking your mail and composing new messages.
