TURN ON THE TABS, BABY

TURN ON THE TABS, BABY!

This isn't actually a tip, but so few Safari users I run into realize it's there, I had to include it, because for many people this will forever change the way they get their info on the Web. It's called Tabbed Browsing and what it does is let you put a folder of sites you visit daily (like news sites, Apple news sites, graphics sites, sports sites, etc.) up on the Bookmarks Bar. If you Command-click on that folder, it loads every single site in that folder, and puts each one on its own separate tab just under the Bookmarks Bar. It loads the first site in the list first, so while you're reading that page, all the others are loading (in order). So when you click on the second page, it's already loaded (unless you have a really slow Internet connection, of course). While you're looking at the second site, the rest are all still loading. It makes you feel as if you're browsing at hyper speed, and if you try it once, you'll be hooked!

You turn on Tabbed Browsing by going under the Safari menu, under Preferences, and clicking on the Tabs icon, then turning on Enable Tabbed Browsing. Close Preferences. Next click on the Show All Bookmarks icon in the Bookmarks Bar to bring up all your bookmarked sites. Press Command-Shift-N to add a new Bookmarks folder, and you'll see a new folder appear in the Collections list on the left side of the Safari window. Give this folder a name (for our example, we'll name it "Sports Sites"). Then click on the collection named Bookmarks Menu to reveal all the bookmarks saved in your pop-down menu. Drag your favorite sports websites from this list into the Bookmarks Bar, and then into the Sports Sites folder in the left column (mine has ESPN, CNNsi, and the Buccaneers' homepage).

Once you have all your sports sites in that folder, click on the Bookmarks Bar collection at the top of the Collections list to reveal its contents. Now, just click-and-drag your folder into the main window and position it where you want it (to load first, second, etc.). That's ityou've got your first tab. Repeat this process for as many folders as you want (or as can fit in your browser's Bookmarks Bar), and you're in business. Again, try this once and you'll be hooked on it forever.
