THE KILLER TROUBLESHOOTING TIP: DELETING THE PREFERENCES

This is probably the most important tip in this entire chapter because if something goes wrong in Photoshop, almost regardless of what it is, deleting Photoshop's preferences file will usually fix it. In fact, if you call Adobe tech support, this is usually the first thing they'll tell you to try when you're having problems, so you might as well beat them to the punch. All you have to do is find the preferences file, delete it, then (and this is key) restart Photoshop, and the program will automatically build a new factory-fresh set of preferences, and chances are that'll fix the problem. The only hard part of this repair scenario is actually finding the preferences themselves, which apparently were hidden by the same person who hid Jimmy Hoffa, so they're not easy to find. Here's where to look:

Windows 2000:

C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\ApplicationData\AdobePhotoshop\CS\Adobe Photoshop CS Settings

Windows XP:

C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\ApplicationData\Adobe\Photoshop\CS\Adobe Photoshop CS Settings

Macintosh OS X v. 10.2-10.3:

Users\<username>\Library\Preferences\Adobe Photoshop CS Settings\Adobe Photoshop CS Prefs
