Summary

UAC is a radical departure from earlier versions of Windows. Its main purpose is to enable more users to run more applications without being an administrator, and to simplify becoming an administrator when needed. While it is not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, we believe UAC is quite usable for the majority of users. Both the authors run with UAC enabled, and on many of our systems we run as standard users. We find that unless you routinely run tests and try to reconfigure your systems, you can go days, maybe even weeks, in normal operations without seeing a UAC prompt. Many information workers and home users will rarely see them once the system is stable.

We encourage everyone to give UAC a try. If you absolutely cannot stand it, turn off the prompting for admins in admin-approval mode and see if that helps. At least that way you retain some of the benefits from UAC.
