Chapter Review Questions

1:

You are setting up a 1TB, mirrored volume (called datavol in volume group /dev/vg01 , the actual disks involved are irrelevant at this time). Comment on the following command sequence, and offer a possible alternative command sequence if you feel the task could be accomplished with the same results but in a quicker time frame.

 # lvcreate L 1048576 n data datavol /dev/vg01 # lvextend m 1 /dev/vg01/datavol

2:

MWC consistency for mirrored volumes offers faster mirror resynchronization, especially after a reboot. Why might you decide to turn off MWC consistency for your Primary swap area and what additional steps will you need to undertake, as well as an lvchange command in order to effect the change?

3:

I have experienced a serious head-crash on the disk that constitutes /dev/vg00. As such, I have lost both my PVRA and VGRA . My intended course of action ( briefly ) is to:

  1. Boot the system into LVM-maintenance mode.

  2. Perform a vgcfgrestore to restore the PVRA/VGRA

  3. Ensure that I can activate the /dev/vg00 .

  4. Recover the boot area using mkboot

  5. Recover the BDRA using the lvlnboot command.

Comment on the likelihood of success for the (brief) troubleshooting methodology outlined above.

4:

You have purchased an additional Fibre Channel interface card that has been integrated into your Switch Fabric SAN . You have a 256GB LUN housed on an HP XP disk array connected via the SAN . You can now see four device files all relating to your original LVM volume. You intend to utilize these other links as LVM PV Links to improve availability and improve IO performance. Which commands will you need to use in order to provide both high availability and improved IO performance?

5:

Your system has been reinstalled due to a major failure of the OS disk(s). You want to vgimport your application volume groups with the correct logical volume names . In order to achieve this, you need to have access to a mapfile detailing the logical volumes in each volume group. You don't have such a mapfile but think you can remember the order and name of the logical volumes in each volume group. You decide to create a mapfile simply using a text editor. What is the likelihood of the vgimport command accepting a mapfile that wasn't created by the vgexport command? If this fails, can you ever import the volume group without a mapfile ?
