A.10 Conclusions

We have discussed many aspects of system architecture to familiarize ourselves with a number of concepts prevalent in today's high-performance systems. We started with a discussion of processor architecture including a discussion of Hewlett-Packard's two main processor architectures: PA-RISC and IA-64. We moved on through the memory hierarchy and then disk drives . We concluded our discussions with a look at ways to familiarize yourself with the hardware on your HP-UX server(s). Don't forget about the standard commands available on HP-UX to perform this task, commands such as ioscan , dmesg , lanscan , and fcmsutil to name a few. The alternative approaches we looked at were simply that: alternatives . Once we know what hardware we are dealing with, we can move to the many different aspects of managing this hardware. Read the questions at the end of this section to see whether you understand the material covered.
