Chapter Review Questions

1:

Looking at Figure 15-6, we have two machines each with four LAN cards. How many linkloop commands will we need to run to fully test all connections through the switch/bridge? If none of the linkloop commands work, what may be causing the problem?

2:

We have changed the MAC address of one of our nodes (on network-1). It transpires that we have chosen a real MAC address belong to a machine that is located on network-25 (see Figure 15-7).

Figure 15-7. Is communication possible even with duplicate MAC addresses?

Both machines have different IP/Network addresses but share the same MAC address. The routers called router1 and router15 use dynamic routing to communicate with all other routers in the corporate Intranet. Will nodes Fin100 and Corp100 be able to communicate even though they have the same MAC address? Explain your answer.

3:

I am subnetting my corporate Intranet and realize that I need 16 networks. I have control over the entire Class C address 192.168.128.0. What should my subnet mask be? How many nodes will I be able to configure per subnet? What is the network address of these two nodes?

  1. Node1: 192.168.128.155

  2. Node2: 192.168.128.66

4:

Why might it take some time before we see many more devices on the Internet using IPv6 addresses? Take this MAC address, 0x080009bbbbbb , and transform it into an IPv6 link-local address conforming to the 64-bit EUI-64 interface identifier defined in RFC 2373 (specify the address using the colon hexadecimal notation).

5:

Give a reason why you think we cannot mix link technologies in a single APA aggregate, e.g., FDDI interfaces alongside 100-BaseT interfaces. What does APA LAN Monitor mode do differently from APA Hot Standby in order for LAN Monitor mode to be able to detect link failures across the entire aggregate quicker?
