Windows Issues

Only a couple of issues arise with Windows and Flash 5, but they're centered on the Player causing the system or the browser to crash. That's always fun.

Flash Crashes on Windows NT 4.0 Using MSIE

Systems running Windows NT 4.0 and Internet Explorer will sometimes cause the entire operating system to crash (bringing up the blue screen of death) when running the Flash Player due to a conflict with the ATI 3D Rage Pro AGP 2X Graphics Adapter Version 4.00.1381.1065, 4.0.0. To fix this problem, download the latest video driver from ATI's support page at http://support.atitech.ca/drivers/drivers.html.

Flash Crashes in MSIE When Tables Are Embedded

Early releases of the Flash 5 Player can cause Internet Explorer to crash when a movie that contains an HTML text field in Flash is embedded in an HTML table.

This currently affects the following Windows/browser combinations:

IE 4 on Windows 95

IE 5 on Windows 98 SE

IE 5.5 on Windows Me

Currently, this problem can be solved one of two ways:

  • Don't embed Flash movies in HTML tables if the Flash movie contains HTML-formatted text fields.

  • Upgrade the Flash Player to version 5 release 41 or higher. Remember, this one affects your users, not just you. You'll need to detect the version of the Player that a user is running and force an upgrade, if necessary. You can do that easily with the Flash Dispatcher.
