Chapter 10.   Dealing with Legacy Components in .NET

Interoperability doesn't mean platform interoperability alone, and it could be looked upon under the following categories. When a technology addresses all the three interoperability standards equally, it can be said to be the best.

  • Language interoperability . Microsoft .NET CLR strongly focuses on language interoperability. With the release of .NET, language is a mere choice of programming rather than anything else. The choice of programming language only concerns the programmer, not the .NET CLR. The current and the future language could be targeted to .NET CLR seamlessly.

  • Standards interoperability . Microsoft heavily relies on open standards such as HTTP, SMTP, SOAP, and XML for global reach. These standards are more or less industry uniform standards. Microsoft has contributed a great deal to the standardization of these protocols along with other industry leaders , especially in the areas of SOAP and XML.

  • Platform interoperability . Architecturally speaking, the code generated using .NET Framework is platform neutral. Because .NET is evolving, in the near future there could be efforts to port it to different operating systems, not necessarily by Microsoft.
