Active Server Pages (ASP) has been a popular Microsoft technology for generating dynamic Web pages. However, its success is not without its share of problems. This has led to the development of an altogether new technology, ASP.NET.

ASP.NET is not just a new version of ASP with a couple of bug fixes and some new features thrown in for good measure. It is a completely different paradigm for a new generation of Web pages built from the ground up. It retains the strengths of ASP and at the same time tries to overcome most of the difficulties presented by the existing ASP architecture.

Before going into what ASP.NET is, we delve into issues faced in ASP development and how ASP.NET overcomes these issues.
