Google Web Accelerator

The famous Google search engine recently acquired a new service called Web Accelerator, one of the three main features of which is compression of the HTTP contents before sending it to the client (Fig. 30.2). The two other features are caching of Web pages and prefetching (data transmission before sending a query). The client component of this accelerator is implemented in the form of an active panel for Internet Explorer 6. x and Firefox 1.0+.

Google Web Accelerator speeds up page loading (which is important for slow GPRS connections) and reduces the average cost of opening one page from 3 to 5 times (loading of graphics must be disabled; otherwise , no performance gain would be achieved). Unfortunately, this service didn't operate even a week. Now, the home page of the project ( http://Webaccelerator.google.com ) contains a disappointing message: "Thank you for your interest in Google Web Accelerator. We have currently reached our maximum capacity of users and are actively working to increase the number of users we can support."

Those who visit the project site now have to wait.

Other Web Accelerators

In addition to Google, there are other Web accelerators that can be easily found on the Internet, provided that you instruct the search engine to filter out all pages containing the word "Google." There are Web accelerators that work. There is also a ton of trash that pretends to be called Web accelerator. Sometimes, users are offered a trivial Trojan under the name of a Web accelerator. As a rule, such accelerators install remote administration systems or generate intense promotion traffic at the expense of the user . Thus, before starting the newly-obtained accelerator, it is necessary to check it for viruses, spyware, and Trojan components . At the least, it is necessary to check it with an antivirus scanner; ideally , you should disassemble it.

Web accelerators might be either freeware or commercial. It is expedient to immediately discard all freeware accelerators, because all of them are overloaded and work with great difficulty. But are you going to pay for an accelerator? If you're economizing, it is possible to do without extra expenses. Lots of commercial accelerators offer a free trial period, which can be easily extended by reregistration. Even if they rumble your trick and refuse to provide the service, there won't be any trouble. Web accelerators are numerous . You can always choose another one. There are no considerable differences among them.

The best Web accelerators are as follows :

  • http://www.propel.com ” This is an excellent Web accelerator (Fig. 30.3) that compresses not only text content but also graphics (Fig. 30.4) and does this practically without loss of quality. This accelerator supports all versions of Windows and browsers, including Internet Explorer, Netscape, Opera, Mozilla, and Firefox. The trial period is 7 days.

  • http://www.khelekore.org/rabbit ” This accelerator is the best of the freeware ones (Fig. 30.4). It compresses both text and graphics, and it supports all versions of Windows and browsers, including Internet Explorer, Netscape, Opera, Mozilla, and Firefox.
