Create Layers

As you create more objects in an illustration, you should create them on their own separate layers, unless they are to be grouped together with objects on an existing layer. To create a new layer, click the Create New Layer button, located at the bottom of the Layers palette, or choose New Layer from the Layers palette menu, as shown in Figure 20-5.

Sublayers, like layers, enable you to further organize your work. You can use sublayers to group like objects together under one layer and still have the same organizational control you do with layers. To create a new sublayer, click the Create New Sublayer button located at the bottom of the Layers palette.

You can create as many layers and sublayers as you need. Once you have created a layer, you can expand it to display all of its sublayers and objects by clicking the triangle to the left of the layer or sublayer (so that it points down). You can collapse the layer display by clicking the triangle again (so that it points to the right).
