Remote Assistance and Terminal Services Support

 < Day Day Up >

As I mentioned earlier, SMS 2003 supports the Remote Assistance and Terminal Services features available in the applicable Windows operating systems. SMS 2003 leverages these features by integrating them into the SMS Administrator Console. You initiate a remote session using Remote Assistance or Terminal Services essentially the same way you initiate a Remote Tools session. Follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the Collections node in the SMS Administrator Console.

  2. Open the collection that contains the SMS client with which you want to initiate a remote session.

  3. Right-click the client and select All Tasks from the context menu.

  4. Select either Start Remote Assistance or Start Remote Desktop Connection.

The command that you can select from the context menu depends on the combination of operating systems running on the client computer and the computer running the SMS Administrator Console. If the client computer and the computer running the SMS Administrator Console are both running Windows XP Professional or Windows Server 2003, the command Start Remote Assistance appears on the context menu of the client you’ve selected in the collection.

However, the command Start Remote Desktop Connection will appear if the client computer has Terminal Server client installed and enabled and it and the SMS Administrator Console computer are both running one of these operating systems:

  • Windows NT Server 4.0, Terminal Server Edition

  • Windows 2000 Server family

  • Windows XP Professional

  • Windows Server 2003 family

Selecting Start Remote Assistance initiates a remote session using the Remote Assistance feature. Selecting Start Remote Desktop Connection initiates a Terminal Services session.
