Checkpoints

Because the implementation of software metering in SMS 2003 is so different from SMS 2.0, you can’t migrate or view any metered data that you collected using SMS 2.0, nor can you migrate any software metering program properties. Similarly, you can’t view metered data collected using an SMS 2003 site in an SMS 2.0 site. SMS 2003 no longer uses the software metering site system role and so won’t recognize any SMS 2.0 software metering site systems that might still exist.

Also, remember that after you create a new rule and propagate it to your SMS clients, you’ll still need to wait for the next collection and summarization cycles to complete before you can view the data. Since the default for collecting data from the client is seven days and summarization takes place once a day, you might wait for up to eight days for the first data to be viewable.

Finally, be sure to review your rule properties. Check the program name and especially the version number you’re trying to match. It might be a good idea to try out your rules in a test environment to be sure that you’re actually monitoring the programs you want to monitor.
