Computing Edge is a Microsoft Certified Solution Provider (MCSP) specializing in the development of products that enhance and add value to SMS 2.0 as well as previous versions of SMS. Computing Edge, founded in 1994, started out by primarily developing and consulting in management products with SMS. Over time, this development led to a line of products called +Plus Pack. Some of the Computing Edge products that many SMS administrators have found useful are described in the following sections. Additional information about these and other products can be found at Computing Edge's Web site. Computing Edge also sponsors a well-attended annual SMS User Conference as well as product road shows; it posts information relating to these events on its Web site.

Notification Server

Notification Server is a companion product for the SMS site server. It extends the reach of SMS by providing an integration method for UNIX systems and remote/mobile users, as well as stand-alone environments. Notification Server also extends the features of SMS by providing support for Active Management solutions that enable real-time detection, notification, and correction of problems.

Web Administrator

Web Administrator extends the management interface to UNIX and any other platform that supports a Web browser, making it a unique enterprise management tool. For instance, using Web Administrator a UNIX administrator can manage any UNIX system from his or her workstation simply by using a Netscape Web browser.

Computing Edge is committed to providing UNIX administrators and managers with a management interface that is easy to use from their local machine. For example, Web Reports is integrated with Web Administrator to support server-side rendering for graphs in support of Netscape.

Web Administrator for Microsoft SMS enables administrators and help desk personnel to access the functions of SMS 2.0, including remote control, from any Web browser. Additionally, in Windows 95 and Windows 98 environments help desk personnel can use the same operating system as their end-users and still run SMS to manage inventory and remote control functions. The Web Administrator interface can be customized and integrated with the help desk for quick access to common end-user issues. A demo version of this product is included on the companion CD for this book.

Web Reports

Web Reports provides administrators and their managers with a means of accessing database information about SMS resources by integrating over 100 report templates with the functions provided by Web Administrator. All of the reports, including presentation-quality graphs, are linked to the systems whose information is shown in the report. Also, reports are automatically scheduled to run at times when the database is inactive, thereby reducing the overhead and load on the SMS site server. A demo version of this product is included on the companion CD for this book.

UNIX Inventory +Solution

UNIX Inventory +Solution tracks hardware and software inventories for multiple-vendor UNIX systems and integrates this information with the SMS database. Standard inventory groups include: Operating System, Patches, Processors, Memory, Swap Space, Disk, File System, Network, Print Queues, Cron Queue, Users, Groups, and Software Audit. A toolkit permits extensions and customization of the inventory data.

UNIX SW Delivery +Solution

UNIX SW Delivery +Solution enables SMS administrators to distribute software to UNIX systems. It provides full support for SMS packages and advertisements.

Baseline +Plus

Baseline +Plus provides a means for detecting machines with nonstandard configurations. After creating the standard configuration of machines or groups of machines, you can run a scan of the SMS database to determine which clients deviate from the set standard. This product detects what applications are missing, what settings are different, and what programs should be removed.

Serial Number +Plus

Serial Number +Plus retrieves the manufacturer, model, model number, serial number, BIOS manufacturer, BIOS version, and memory module configuration from SMS clients without having to install any other software, such as Desktop Management Interface (DMI). Serial Number +Plus also enables you to import leasing information such as the start and end dates of leases and provides a variety of lease management reports—for example, listing machines with less than three months left on their lease and listing the average age of leased machines by department. A demo version of this product is included on the companion CD.
