After reading Chapters 17 and this chapter, you should be well aware of the importance of creating and following an ongoing maintenance schedule for your SMS database. Chapter 17 focused on tasks that can be performed directly through the SMS Administrator Console. This chapter focused specifically on the SQL server and the tools and procedures that facilitate the management and maintenance of the server and the SMS database.

Part IV of this book focused mainly on the SMS database. We explored ways to extract and report on data in the database, how to secure that data, and how to recover in the event of a failure of some kind. We also discussed ways to maintain the integrity of the SMS database and optimize the SQL server hosting that database.

Part V, the final part of this book, enables the administrator to look both forward and backward in providing SMS 2.0 support. Chapter 19 examines the process of migrating from an SMS 1.2 environment to an SMS 2.0 environment. You'll learn how to support both versions of SMS within the same hierarchy and how to upgrade from SMS 1.2 to SMS 2.0. Chapter 20 compares SMS 2.0 features to similar features contained in Microsoft Windows 2000, and examines how SMS 2.0 can be used to support the Microsoft Windows 2000 environment.
