Review

This chapter is the foundation for editing using Avid Xpress Pro. If you've edited on other nonlinear editing systems, some of this might seem very basic. If you're new to nonlinear editing, be sure you understand the basics in this chapter before you move into the next chapter.

Trimming, covered next, can be one of the most confusing concepts to new editors. Let's review what was covered in this chapter.

  • There are three windows that need to stay open when editing with Avid Xpress Pro: the Composer window, the Project window, and the Timeline window.

  • Many windows have Fast Menus, which allow you to access menu items quickly.

  • In Basic mode, you can work with pop-up monitors .

  • Toolsets allow you to open a variety of windows and tools. The Source/Record toolset is the best toolset to use when editing.

  • You can load a clip into the source monitor three ways. One method is to double-click a clip, the second method is to drag and drop a clip into the source monitor, and the last method is to select it from the Clip Name pull-down menu above the source monitor.

  • The default play keys are both the tilde key and the 5 key. Press these keys once to play and again to stop.

  • I on the keyboard marks an IN point; O marks an OUT point.

  • There are two kinds of edits, overwrite and splice (OverwriteB key, Splice-in V key).

  • Two methods to remove an edit are lift and extract (LiftZ key, ExtractX key).

  • Avid Xpress Pro allows you to undo and redo 32 previous actions.
