Marking a Clip

Editing begins by marking an IN and OUT point on either your source or Composer monitors . Because you have yet to perform any edits, you can make your IN and OUT points on the source side. Play through a clip and stop at a point in the footage where you want your first edit to start. Underneath your source monitor are IN and OUT markers (see Figure 3.11).

Click the Mark IN button and you notice a Mark IN icon appears underneath your source footage. You'll also notice a patterned line appears at the edge of the frame (see Figure 3.12).

Now it's time to determine your OUT point. Play your footage forward and place a Mark OUT point. The keyboard shortcuts are I for the IN point and O for the OUT point.

To ensure that this is the portion of the clip you would like to edit, press the 6 key on the keyboard. By default, this plays your clip from the IN point to the OUT point. This is very handy when trying to end an audio edit exactly where you want. You can also play just to the OUT point. Place the Position Indicator just prior to the OUT point. Press the Option and Play keys together (Macintosh OS) or the Alt and Play keys (in Windows). The Position Indicator will play forward to the OUT point.

You can also loop a clip. This will be handier when you're working on the record side. To loop between IN and OUT points, press the Control key (Macintosh OS) or the Alt key (Windows) and press the 6 key, which is the Play from IN to OUT button. The Position Indicator will jump back to the IN point and play to the OUT point. It will continue to do this until you press the stop key, which is the spacebar. Again, this can be very helpful if you wanted to loop a finished sequence on to a tape.

NOTE

If the IN and OUT points are not correct, you can simply mark new points. Hold down the Option key (Macintosh OS) or the Alt key (Windows) and drag a point to a new location.

If you want to delete an IN or OUT point, simply click on the D key for delete IN point and the F key for delete OUT point. There are also icons that can be mapped for these features. You'll also notice that if you ever close a clip that had existing marks, and then re- open it, the marks remain .
