DV Scene Extraction

If your original material is digital video (DV), you have the option of recording your material using the DV Scene Extraction option. While capturing, the DV Scene Extraction feature automatically creates smaller clipswhat are referred to as sub-clipsfrom your master clips. These sub-clips are created based on when you started and stopped recording scenes with your camera. Each time you start recording, a piece of information called metadata is added to the DV tape. This metadata includes the time of day, among other things. Avid Xpress Pro uses this time metadata to break up one long master clip into several sub-clips. It can also add locators or markers to your clips, making it easy to find a clip's start time. This is a great feature that makes the process of recording extremely simple.

DV Scene Extraction can occur during or after the recording process. To use this feature during the process, you must first change some settings. In your Project window, select Settings to open the Capture Settings window. Click on the DV Options tab (see Figure 2.17).

Click the DV Scene Extraction option button. You now have the option to divide your clips into sub-clips, add locators to each new start and end time, or both. I recommend making them into sub-clips and not adding any locators for now. Locators are great indicators, but I'll go into more detail about them in Chapter 6, "Additional Editing Tools".

If you have already captured a clip, and want to make it into sub-clips based on the time of day information, simply select the clip or clips you want to affect and choose DV Extraction from the Bin menu. Again, decide whether you want to make sub-clips, locators, or both. If you decide to make sub-clips, you need to choose a bin in which you want to store the new clips.

The new sub-clips will reside in the bin you selected, and will share the same name as the master clip, with the exception of an appended number (see Figure 2.18).

DV Scene Extraction does not work with audio-only clips, non-DV material, or the DVCPro format. DVCPro does not provide the metadata needed to perform this function.
