Modifying a Clip s Data

Modifying a Clip's Data

It is possible to change data in certain cells that are not custom columns . For example, let's say you logged several clips prior to capturing them. When you display the clips in the Text view, you realize that each clip was logged with V1, A1, and A2 tracks. You intended to only capture the video tracks, not the audio tracks. To change this information in the track's column, you need to modify the clip's information. If you tried to simply click in the clip's track cell , you would be locked out from making any changes.

Only certain information can be modified. To modify a clip's data, select the clip and choose Modify from the Clip menu (see Figure 14.12).

Figure 14.12. The Modify window allows you to change certain attributes associated with a clip.

The Modify window allows you to:

  • Change a clip's timecode from non-drop frame to drop frame

  • Adjust the starting timecode of clip

  • Add or decrease to the starting timecode

  • Enter a custom key number for 24p, 25p and matchback projects

  • Select a pull-down phase

  • Set which tracks will be captured

  • Modify which source tape each clip is linked to

Each of these commands can have a dramatic effect on your clip. For example, if you change the clips from non-drop frame to drop frame, the clips might no longer match the source tape they where logged from.

For the example here, you need to change the tracks linked to the clip. Select the clips, choose Modify, and then choose Set Tracks. A dialog box will appear allowing you to select which tracks you want to link to the clips (see Figure 14.13).

Unlinking a Clip

There will be situations when you'll need to unlink a clip to its media file. Perhaps the file became corrupt or you need to change the clip's starting timecode. If you select a clip and open the Bin menu, you'll notice that there is a Relink command. However, you won't see an Unlink command. Avid Xpress Pro sort of hides this command due to the fact that unlinking clips can cause serious issues when working with master clips. To unlink a clip from its media file, select the clip, hold down the Shift and Ctrl keys, and then open the Bin menu. You'll notice that the Relink command has changed to the Unlink command (see Figure 14.14).

NOTE

graphic/pcaution.gif CAUTION

Most of the modify commands should only be performed on logged clips, not on clips that have already been captured. For example, if you attempt to change a clip's starting timecode after it has already been captured, Avid Xpress Pro presents you with several warnings about how this will affect the clip. In fact, unless you've unlinked a clip, many of the modify commands will not work.

Choose Unlink to unlink a clip from its clip information. This will allow you to change its start timecode. If you already captured the media for a clip, unlinking will break the connection from the media files to the clip and the clip will display the message "Media Offline."

NOTE

graphic/ptip.gif TIP

You can also unlink a clip directly in the bin. Highlight a clip and hold down the Shift and Control keys. Click on the clip's icon (right-click for Windows). A menu will appear with Unlink as one of the options (see Figure 14.15).

Pressing the Shift and Control keys provides a shortcut to the Unlink command.

Relinking a Clip

A clip can become unlinked from its media files in several ways:

  • The drive the media files are stored on was removed and is now returned.

  • The clips were unlinked intentionally.

  • The clips were moved from one drive to another, and the link between the clips and the media files was broken.

To relink a clip, select the clip, clips, or the sequence you want to relink and choose Relink for the Bin menu. The Relink dialog box will open with several choices (see Figure 14.16).

Figure 14.16. When you relink a clip, you'll have several options on how the clip, clips, or sequence are relinked.

graphic/14fig16.gif

First you'll need to choose by which method the clips will be relinkedby their timecode and tape name or (if it's a film project) by their key number. Depending on what type of clip you're trying to relink, you'll have the option to either relink offline non-master clips to any online items or relink all non-master clips to selected online items (see Figure 14.17).

Figure 14.17. The first two options are different in the way they search for clips that you want to relink.

graphic/14fig17.gif

The first option relinks sequences and clips to the master clips that contain the same material. The second option relinks related sequences and sub-clips only to a clip highlighted in a bin. If you simply need to relink a master clip to a media file, choose the third option called Relink Offline Master Clip to Online Media Files.

Once you determine which clips, sub-clips, and sequences you want to relink, you can choose which drive to search and which relink method you want to perform (see Figure 14.18).

Figure 14.18. When you relink clips, you can choose which method of relinking fits your needs.

graphic/14fig18.gif

The default method is Most Recent. This will relink media files to the most recently created clip. Highest Quality will scan the drives for the highest resolution media files for online work. Most Compressed is the opposite of highest quality; it will look for the media files with the most compression, which also means the lowest quality. Use this option only if your sequence is in an offline resolution. The last option, Specific Resolution, allows you to determine which resolution you want to relink to.

If you're the only editor on Avid Xpress Pro, chances are you won't be performing a lot of relinking but, as your work and the amount of projects you edit increases , there will be times when clips become unlinked. Before you decide to recapture any material, always try to relink the media.
