Adding Audio to Your Movie

When you record a movie with Movie Maker, any existing audio from your video clips will be included. You can also add a narration or a music soundtrack that will be integrated with the audio. If you didn't record an audio track when you originally recorded the video, however, and you want to add one now, or if you want to add a narration or a musical soundtrack to an existing movie, it's a simple process. A narration can either merge with the existing audio for the movie or completely replace it, whereas a soundtrack is always merged with any existing audio for the movie.

Create a Narration

Start Movie Maker, open your project (or save the project you're currently working on), and make sure that the video clips and transitions are ordered correctly.

Choose Timeline from the View menu if the Timeline isn't already displayed.

Click in the Timeline at the point where you want the narration to start. You can narrate only in locations where you haven't already inserted a narration or a soundtrack.

Choose Narrate Timeline from the Tools menu.

Check the options for your recording. If the options aren't visible, click Show Options in the Narrate Timeline area to display the options. Make whatever changes you want.

Set the microphone Input level. Speak into your microphone, and use the slider to determine the proper sound level.

Click Start Narration. Watch your movie in the preview and on the Timeline as you record your narration. When you've finished, click Stop Narration, and save the file when prompted to do so. The narration will automatically be placed on the Audio/Music portion of the Timeline. Click Close.

Tip

The Audio line on the Timeline shows the audio that's incorporated into your video clip. The Audio/Music line shows the narration or the soundtrack. Items on the Audio/Music line can be cropped, moved, or deleted to customize your movie.

Add a Soundtrack

Create or import the audio files that you want to use for your soundtrack.

If the Audio line for the Video section isn't shown, click the plus sign in the Video section to display the line so that you can see the existing audio.

Drag a sound clip onto the Audio/Music line at the location (that is, the time) where you want the clip to be played during the movie. Add and position any other sound clips.

Click the Rewind Timeline button.

Click the Play Timeline button to preview your entire movie with the narration or soundtrack in place.

Click an audio clip, and press Ctrl+U (or choose Audio Levels from the Tools menu), choose Volume from the menu, and then use the Audio Clip Volume dialog box to adjust the volume of that clip. Repeat for audio clips in both the Audio and the Audio/Music lines to get the correct sound levels.

Save your project.
