Summary

The GT3 architecture is a layered architecture with the emphasis on separating the functionality at each layer. This flexibility enables high-level services to utilize the lower-layer services in a plug-and-play manner in order to facilitate simpler system designs. The provisioning for host environment independence and the provisioning to integrate into a Web service engine of choice makes this more attractive. Even though this is highly desirable, this level of extensibility is not yet available in Globus GT3, where the current Web service engine of choice is Apache Axis.

In the next chapter, we will see how this architecture can be converted into a flexible and extensible programming model. Later in the book, we will see some GT3-provided high-level services and their respective functionalities.
