In this chapter, we took a quick tour of the bash scripting shell. We explored variables in bash, including special variables that describe the environment. The basics of scripting were introduced, along with a demonstration of simple numerical methods in bash. Fundamental concepts in bash were also reviewed, including tests, conditionals, and a number of looping constructs. Methods for input and output in scripts were also discussed, in addition to bashs function specification constructs. Finally, a number of useful scripts were discussed and dissected to illustrate bash scripting.
