Chapter 20. Using the Private Messages Module

The Private Messages module is actually a part of the phpBB software, which is embedded in and integrated with PHP-Nuke to provide the Forums module's functionality. That doesn't mean anything especially important, but it does mean that the Private Messages module will look a bit different than some other modules because it's really coming from software that was written by someone else. Figure 20.1 shows the main page of the Private Messages module. As you can see, it's sort of like a mini e-mail system, totally contained within your site.

It's often easiest to think of Private Messages as a form of e-mail, in fact, although there's no actual e-mail server and you can't use an e-mail program like Microsoft Outlook Express to access your private messages. You have an Inbox, a Sentbox (for messages you've sent), an Outbox, and a Savebox (for messages you want to retain). Each has a quota, which specifies the maximum number of messages you can store. It's not many; this module isn't intended to be a robust e-mail service. Rather, it is intended for basic, quick communications between site members.

Obviously, since private messages are a person-to-person thing, anonymous users can't effectively use this module because they'd have no way to retrieve messages. I recommend configuring this module, via the Modules section of the Administration menu, to provide access only to registered users.
