User-Submitted Downloads

How do I upload files to the Downloads module?

The Downloads module doesn't really keep track of files. Really, it's just keeping track of links to files that are already on the Internet. So if you want to link to files on your own Web server, you can, but you'll need to take care of uploading the files yourself. To do so, you can use FTP or another means provided by your hosting service (if you're using a hosting service).

Why do users keep submitting broken link reports for perfectly good downloads?

Sometimes the link you're pointing to might not workperhaps the Web site is temporarily down, or perhaps the Internet is just busy. Your users might perceive this as a failing on your part and might report the link as broken. However, when you check, things might be working fine. You'll just have to accept this occasional annoyance as part and parcel of operating a Web site.

Do downloads count against my site's disk space limit?

Only if you're linking to files that live on your Web server. Keep in mind that the Downloads module can link to files on other Web servers, too; those files don't live on your server and, thus, don't count against any disk space limits that your hosting service might have imposed on your site.

When users are in your Downloads module, they have the capability to add a download via a link right under the Downloads graphical logo. Users are requested to input the same information that you'd input when adding a download, but the download isn't automatically added to the database. Instead, you have to review it and approve it.

You'll know that you have pending downloads to review by checking the Waiting Content block; you'll see a line labeled Downloads that shows how many submitted downloads you have waiting for you. You can review each of these; modify them, as appropriate; and accept them into your database.

Users can also submit modifications to an existing download by going to that download's details page and clicking the Modify link. Again, any modifications must be reviewed and approved by you, and they'll show up in the Waiting Content block under the Mod Downloads entry.
