General Site Info

The General Site Info section configures several important global settings for your site:

  • Site Name. You can type anything you want here; this name is displayed in Web browser title bars when they're browsing your site.

  • Site URL. This needs to be the complete URL of your site's PHP-Nuke root folder. In other words, if you have a Web server named www.scriptinganswers.com (I do) and you've installed PHP-Nuke into a folder named CMS2, then the full path to PHP-Nuke's index.php page is www.scriptinganswers.com/cms2/index.php. So, the site URL would just be www.scriptinganswers.com/cms2.

  • Site Logo. This is a version of your site's graphical logo, if you have one, which is compatible with mobile devices like cell phones and PDAs. You must copy the graphic to the Images folder of the PHP-Nuke Web site. This logo isn't displayed on your site's home page; it's sent only to mobile clients who access your site through the AvantGo module.

  • Site Slogan. Some themes display a slogan, or tagline, on each page. This is where you define that slogan.

  • Site Start Date. The date your site opened for business.

  • Administrator E-mail. The e-mail address where you want to receive administration-related e-mails about your site.

  • Number of Items in Top Page. There's a Top 10 page in PHP-Nuke that shows the top 10 most-read articles. You can change that to be a Top 5, 15, 20, 25, or 30 page instead of Top 10.

  • Stories Number in Home. The number of articles to display on the home page. Note that you can allow users to override this number with their own preference; see the "Number of News Items in Home" option under "User and Censor Options" later in this topic.

  • Stories in Old Articles Box. PHP-Nuke provides an Old Articles block that lists older articles (those that won't fit on the home page) to the left or right side of the page. You can configure how many stories appear in this block.

  • Activate Ultramode. A bit later in this topic, I describe RSS newsfeeds, which are also called Ultramode. If you want other Web sites to be able to retrieve a list of news items from your site and display those headlines as links back to your site, then activate Ultramode.

  • Allow Anonymous to Post. This is pretty straightforward. Do you want unidentified users posting on your Web site, or do you want them to have to register and get a password first?

  • Default Theme. This is the theme you want your site to use. By default, users can select their own theme from those installed in PHP-Nuke's Themes folder, but new users will start with your selected theme. Simply delete any themes you don't want your users to access.

  • Site Language. Select the default language for your site.

  • Local Time Format. Use en_US for standard time formatting, such as 8:02 P.M.
