Group Permissions

Managing permissions on a per-user basis, however, can be time-consuming and error-prone, simply because you have to enter so much information that you're bound to make a mistake eventually. That's why the Forums module also supports group-based permissions. Under Group Admin, you can select Management to create groups, modify their membership, and so forth. By default, only one group exists: Moderators. Each group has a description and a user assigned as the group's moderator. Groups can be open, meaning they're shown to all users and users can elect to join them, or closed, meaning they're shown but users can't add themselves. You can also designate groups as hidden, making them available only to you for management purposes.

Groups can be granted permissions in much the same way as individual users, making the group and its members moderators of a specific forum.

How do you get users into groups? There are a couple of ways. As I've mentioned, for open groups, users can add themselves, using the Usergroups link at the top of most Forums module pages. You can also manually edit a user's group memberships by selecting Management under the Users item on the left side of the Forums module's administration page. Note that, in the latest version of PHP-Nuke, some of the group-management options still aren't working correctly; you may run into some SQL errors from time to time. In those cases, try to work around the problem as best you can until the module is updated.
