Posting a Topic

Within a forum's topic listing, users can click the New Topic button to start a new conversation. As shown in Figure 57.2, you provide a title, or subject line, and then the body of your post. At any time, you can highlight a section of text and click one of the buttons: B to turn the highlighted text boldface, I for italics, U for underline; Quote to format the text as a quotation; Code to format the text as program code; and so forth. Scrolling down a bit allows you to enter a poll question and one or more poll options (answer choices) to attach to your posting.

After entering the post, users either can preview it to see what it would look like with all the formatting applied or can just post it. Figure 57.3 shows the final message, which now includes a Post Reply button, allowing a reader to add to the conversation. Also notice the Quote button, which allows another user to create a reply with the original message already filled in and formatted as a quote. This technique allows replies to include a small portion of the original text, helping to set the context for the reply. The user who posted a message, along with moderators, will see an Edit button, allowing the message to be edited. The X button, also available to the poster and moderators, erases the message but not the entire topic.

Posting a reply works just like posting a new message, except that the original conversation is available in a scrolling box, allowing the poster to review the conversation thus far and, if desired, copy short passages of text out of it.
