In this first chapter, we’ve investigated a number of networking topics in preparation for detailed discussions of Sockets API programming. We discussed the Internet model of communication, including the layered network stack architecture and the networking protocols that exist at each of the layers. The packet construction and parsing methods of the layered stack architecture were covered in addition to addressing devices and routing datagrams over the Internet. Finally, the different types of devices were discussed, including their roles and simple architecture.
