This very quick tour of Sockets programming in Perl provided a short discussion of the Perl language and the Sockets methods available within it. Perl provides a nice set of features for Sockets programming, including those that mimic the standard BSD API and additional modules that help simplify network application development. A large variety of abstractions for Application layer protocols can also be imported (from CPAN) that further simplifies complex network applications. Perl continues to be developed and advanced. Perl6 is a rewrite of the interpreter and includes much input from the Perl development community. A major feature of this new release will be simplified maintenance of Perl moving forward.
