PyThon Language Heritage

 < Day Day Up >

Python is an interesting language in the number of characteristics that it portrays. For example, Python is an interpreted, object-oriented scripting language that can be used interactively. Python is also general-purpose and can be used to write applications for a variety of purposes.

Python’s influences were the ABC language (the first scripting language for the Amoeba distributed operating system), Modula-3, and the C language. The ABC language, C, and Modula-3 influenced Python’s syntax, whereas Modula-3 provided the model for exceptions. Some compare Python with BASIC, as it’s very portable and easy to learn. The origin of the Python name was due to Guido Van Rossum being a fan of the 1970s BBC comedy “Monty Python” [Python-FAQ].
